A milestone in Mexican history, Cinco de Mayo originated in the Mexican-American communities during the first years of the American Civil War. Today, it is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture and, contrary to popular belief, it is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely win at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Nonetheless, the holiday is widely celebrated by U.S. revelers with festive celebrations, decor, and food! We like to raise a margarita to any celebration of freedom and democracy in Los Angeles!
